Taking time for your eye health
An eye examination is about much more than just your prescription. We take the time to properly assess both your vision and the health of your eyes.
If you’re a returning patient, we’ll compare your results with previous records and imaging, allowing us to monitor even subtle changes over time.
During a routine eye examination, we assess:
- Vision and prescription – checking your prescription and how well you are seeing, including any changes or limitations to your vision
- Eye health – examining the structures of the eye, including the external eye, retina and optic nerve, and screening for conditions such as glaucoma, which can often develop without noticeable symptoms
- Binocular vision and visual function – assessing how your eyes work together, and where appropriate, aspects such as peripheral or colour vision
Symptom-led (problem-focused) appointments
As part of NHS eye care services, we also offer symptom-led appointments, acting as a first point of contact for urgent or concerning eye problems.
These appointments are designed to assess specific symptoms such as pain, redness, flashes or sudden changes in vision. We will assess the issue, provide advice or treatment where appropriate, and refer you if further care is needed.
The NHS will cover the cost of an eye test with us for anyone who is eligible. There is a link below where you can find out more information. In certain instances, you may also be eligible for NHS Optical Vouchers.

We also can offer home visit eye care in conjunction with Duncan Robertson Optometrist. To make use of this service, just call us and let us know that you need a home appointment and we will arrange that for you.
Chaperones
At Clark Optometrists, your comfort and confidence during your appointment are important to us.
Eye examinations are not intimate procedures, but they do involve close proximity and occasionally some contact around the eyes. While most patients are entirely comfortable, we recognise that some may prefer additional reassurance.
You are welcome to request a chaperone at any point during your visit. A chaperone is a trained member of our team who can remain in the room with you during your examination.
You are also very welcome to bring a friend, family member or carer with you if you prefer.
As part of maintaining a safe and transparent environment, our consulting rooms operate an open-access approach, meaning colleagues may enter when needed during the course of the day. This supports both patient care and staff safety.
If you have any questions or would like to request a chaperone, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
